Hackers unsuccessfully demanded an $18.5-million ransom from the city during a crippling cyberattack last year — or about the same amount Hamilton has spent so far recovering from the incident.

The ransom amount — which the city did not pay — is revealed for the first time in a series of new reports on the cyberattack going to councillors next week. The update also includes the latest cost estimate for dealing with the fallout: about $18.3 million.
