(TNS) — Albemarle County government buildings remained without internet Friday after officials say a “cybersecurity incident” Thursday took facilities offline.

It is unclear if the Albemarle County “incident” is related to the internet outages reported nationwide this week after search engine giant Google’s cloud crashed Thursday. That crash has hit multiple Google Cloud customers, including Spotify, Discord, Snapchat and UPS. Although work is being done to repair service, Google has said that customers are “still experiencing varying degrees of impact.” Google has provided no timeline for full restoration.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY GOVERNMENT OFFICES LOSE INTERNET

Albemarle County’s government facilities on McIntire Road and Fifth Street lost internet Thursday. There is no timeline for restoration.

Customers of multiple internet providers in Central Virginia reported outages throughout Thursday night.

Work is underway in Albemarle County to restore internet at the county’s office building on McIntire Road in Charlottesville and its complex of offices on Fifth Street just south of city limits.

“We have engaged outside cybersecurity experts to guide our response and remediation efforts, and we have alerted state and federal law enforcement, as is our policy,” county spokeswoman Abbey Stumpf said in a statement issued Thursday night.

Some of the county government’s services will be temporarily unavailable while assessments of the county’s security systems are underway.

The McIntire and Fifth Street offices remain open, the county said, although some operations will be delayed until staff can get back online. Phones are still working, but there may be difficulties with voicemail, the county said.

Early voting at the Fifth Street County Office Building ahead of Tuesday’s primary elections has not been affected, and neither has emergency services operated out of the complex there.

“We understand how disruptive this is for both our employees and the public, and we are working urgently to restore full functionality as safely and quickly as possible,” Stumpf said.

Stumpf has not directly responded to Daily Progress inquiries for additional details since the Albemarle County outage was first reported around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Google has said it plans to publish a full report outlining “the root cause, detailed timeline, and robust remediation steps” at some point after its cloud outage is repaired.
