
(US and Canada) The Georgia Institute of Technology has named Joseph “Joe” Lewis as its Associate Vice President of Information Technology and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).
Lewis brings more than 20 years of experience in cybersecurity leadership across federal agencies, the defense sector, and private industry. Before joining Georgia Tech, he served as vice president of Cybersecurity Solutions for Leidos’ Health and Civil sector and interim CISO for its subsidiary, Leidos QTC Health Services. Earlier in his career, he held the position of CISO and director of the Cybersecurity Program Office at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he led enterprise-wide security strategies.
At Georgia Tech, Lewis reports to Leo Howell, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer.
“Joseph is a proven leader in cybersecurity strategy and risk management, and I am pleased he is joining Georgia Tech,” said Howell. “His deep expertise will be instrumental in strengthening the Institute’s information security posture while supporting its mission of innovation and research.”
Lewis has also held senior cybersecurity roles at the U.S. Department of Energy and the Department of the Army.
He holds a Ph.D. in cybersecurity leadership, an MBA, a bachelor’s degree in business information systems, and an executive master’s in public service and administration. He also completed a Chief Information Security Officer certification program at Carnegie Mellon University and holds multiple professional certifications, including Information Systems Security Manager, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), and Project Management Professional (PMP).
In his role at Georgia Tech, Lewis leads Institute-wide information security efforts and heads the Cyber Security team within the Office of Information Technology. His responsibilities include risk management, policy enforcement, and ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of Georgia Tech’s digital assets.
