Cybersecurity and retired U.S. Air Force veteran Max Shier has joined Amentum as Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), according to a recent announcement shared on his LinkedIn. Shier steps into the role with more than 29 years of combined experience in cybersecurity, national defense, and IT operations across both public and private sectors.

Shier most recently served as CISO at Optiv, where he led enterprise security strategy and governance during a nearly three-year tenure. Prior to Optiv, he held cybersecurity leadership positions at Lockheed Martin, including Cybersecurity Director and Senior Manager.

Shier’s career is grounded in operational experience, beginning with nine years of service in U.S. Air Force Security Forces, followed by over a decade of technical and leadership roles in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, where he led IT and cyber operations globally—including postings in South Korea, Germany, and Colorado. His military background includes assignments as Cybersecurity Test Manager, Flight Chief, and Cyber Security Assessor for the Army CIO/G-6.

Beyond his defense work, Shier held cybersecurity roles with organizations including Boeing, Defense Security Service, and the Army Chief Information Officer.

Shier holds a Master of Science in Cyber Security from Colorado Technical University, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from the University of Phoenix, and an Associate of Science in Criminal Justice from the Community College of the Air Force.
